This position, with Dow AgroSciences'' Bioprocess R&D function in Indianapolis, Indiana, and part of The Dow Chemical Company''s Core Biotech group, will accelerate fermentation process development through the application of high throughput research work processes. The successful candidate will advance the development of fermentation processes (microbial and plant cell) by providing research expertise and laboratory leadership for high throughput screening applications.
The primary purpose of this job is to direct laboratory operations for high throughput strain development processes. The candidate will be accountable for managing project scheduling, process operating discipline, functional oversight of research technicians, and overall equipment maintenance. Reporting to a senior scientist, the individual will ensure that the screening platform operates effectively to meet business objectives.
Examples of responsibilities expected from this role are as follows:
- Manage day-to-day lab operations to meet annual screening targets and strain improvement goals.
- Establish and maintain laboratory operating discipline by defining and tracking key performance metrics, effectively scheduling project work load, and leading technical innovations that improve asset performance.
- Develop expertise in the design of experiments for optimizing the high throughput screening program through process improvement and innovative technical approaches.
- Work in a collaborative environment with other biotechnology specialists, interacting effectively internally and across teams to achieve project goals.
- Exhibit a high level of independence and initiative while demonstrating skills in laboratory-scale fermentation research founded in a strong command of chemical / biochemical engineering principles.
- Ensure that lab operations meet all requirements for safe operations.
- Train and mentor lab technicians in the safe and correct use of equipment and the proper execution of work process procedures.
- Participate actively in scientific research while continuing to develop biochemical engineering skills in the area of fermentation process research and development. Effectively deploy the scientific method in all of this work.
- Report results effectively to stakeholders while developing an understanding of how the work supports business objectves.
- Interface with the fermentation team to correlate micro-scale research with strain performance in bioreactors at the pilot plant and manufacturing scale.
- Develop expertise in deploying Six Sigma methodology to drive process improvements.
Qualifications:
BS, MS or PhD in Chemical Engineering or related discipline is required.
Experience in high throughput screening is desirable.
